Bunnings BBQ – It’s a Wrap!

A huge thanks to Club Tweed for donating most of our supplies for the BBQ today – HUGE, HUGE Thank You.

So many thanks to Commodore Bryan Townsend and his wife Muriel, who chased down donations and put together the whole day and STAYED the whole day! The oldest members of our club – and they were heading off to dinner with friends tonight!!! Great stamina!

To all the volunteers who made it happen today – up to 30 club members, including partners, gave their time today for our annual fundraiser. We have not increased our membership fee since the club’s inception in 2011, and the $5 racing fee is a cup of coffee for a few hours of great fun, skill, tension, aggravation and sheer exhilaration of racing fortnightly … plus great friendships created.

Thank you all again for being the best club!

Race 3 – Class Championships

A perfect day with a north-easterly wind of 10 to 14 knots made a great day for sailing for Race 3 of the Class Championships, on the beautiful waters of the Tweed River, with a high tide at 12 pm.  To show the Xmas spirit, our sailors wore Santa Hats, with Kate losing hers during the race (let’s blame MONOPOLY for this).

Fourteen (14) dinghies started  – 4 corsairs, 4 impulses, 4 lasers, 1 hobie and 1 pacer, with a starboard start to the left of the start boat which was the preferred start.

First to the top mark were the Impulses, Adam on his new dinghy PUDDY and Dave on MATCHBOX.  Peter on MR PLOW tried a port tack entry with Debbie on FLYING DRAGON, which didn’t turn out well, leaving him well back in the fleet.

A bit of ruckus for the first rounding at the top mark initially – a few apologies between sailors, with Mark on KEENAS coming in on port to Monique on ROLLING STONE (who was on starboard), with ROLLING STONE having to change course to avert a collision – an apology from KEENAS, and then heading down to the next marker, Mon asking Mark politely to get out of her air, which he kindly did!  Such chivalry!!

An unfortunate day for Michael and crew, sailing corsair EXHALE, with the block and fibreglass being ripped out of the hull!!  EXHALE had to retire, but will be back in 2023 once repairs are completed. Michael’s son, Charlie, rigged an X3 and enjoyed a great time on the water, improving his sailing skills.

Meanwhile, the Impulses were fighting it out with PUDDY in the lead.  MR PLOW overtook MATCHBOX in the 2nd run and was level with PUDDY by the end of the 3rd run, with Adam on PUDDY taking an unscheduled swim near the bottom mark, leaving Peter and Dave to come 1st and 2nd respectively.

Lex sailed his laser and had mechanical issues with his mainsheet.  Debbie on FLYING DRAGON thought he was waiting for her at one stage, but he sailed off again, chasing after Mon and Kate (with Kate in the lead and being overall Laser winner).

Matt and his 3 minions, Aidan, Mia and Posie, on MONOPOLY, had a great start, having great fun playing tactics with Kate on BLUEY during the race, with MONOPOLY finishing ahead of BLUEY.

MONOPOLY won outright in the Corsair Class, with Mark and crew, Kynan and Luke, on KEENAS placing 2nd, and Guy and crew on SQUIRTLE placing 3rd.  Corsair owner Jason Benny-Morris sailed MIDNIGHT MAGIC with his crew Josiah and Debbie against the strong competition of other corsair sailors.

Christian and Aimee sailed their hobie MLC, and had a comfortable and fun race.  Aimee had just completed the club Learn to Sail course that day.  John Hayward and Sasha (who also just finished the Learn to Sail course), sailed the club pacer.  Sasha loved the experience and is excited to race again.

The Xmas Party followed afterwards with a sausage sizzle to celebrate the end of the sailing year for us all.  Family, friends and club juniors attended, with all sharing their experience on their most excellent sailing day.

Special thanks to Bryan, Commodore, for being on the safety and starter boat, Duty Officer Doug, who didn’t sail so he could assist Bryan on the safety boat (and became photographer too), John as race officer, Ashlie and Travis (club junior) who gave up their Sunday afternoon to do the important role of timekeeping, and Muriel (Byan’s wife) for cooking the BBQ for the hungry hoards.

We wish you all a very Merry Xmas and look forward to racing again in 2023.

Saturday SheSails Race Day 30 July 2022

With a Southerly of 15 knots, 4 pacers and a laser headed out, sailing a triangle course.

Brennan and Murielle’s daughter, Erica, supported us all on the safety boat, setting the course, and doing an excellent job with 5 minute starts.

Two races were held with 4 pacer teams and Pancho on the club laser.

Participants were club members Julie, Murielle, Debbie and first timer Kody, with club members John, Lex, Maddie and Monique, giving assistance.

The last two SheSails Saturdays have been provided for participants of our SheSails courses, to give them the opportunity to learn the rules of racing so they can participate in this year’s Summer series.

What happens on the water, stays on the water …. that’s all we are saying! Lots of laughs, and Pancho practicing capsizing on his second time on the laser.

Thanks for volunteers – Brennan, Lex, John and Monique for their continued assistance in sharing their passion of sailing.

“Ladies Race Day” – Saturday 25 June 2022

Today was planned to give those members who have not raced before, the experience of sailing in a race. Little wind was forecast, but by the time we set sail, it was 9 knots, excellent conditions for beginners!

A course, similar to the course the club sails on, only smaller, was set, with 4 pacers and 3 X3s racing. The first race was skippered by our volunteers, Lex, Peter Fell and Maddie, and club sailor Tara. Race 2 was then handed over to the first time racing sailors, under the guidance of the volunteers, to race themselves. Result of Race 2 were:

1st: Kate Stock, Lex and Tarquin

2nd: Pancho and Tara

3rd: Celia and Peter

4th: Gail and Maddie (pipped at the post)!

We were able to get Race 3 in:

1st: Celia and Peter

2nd: Kate, Lex and Tarquin

3rd: Pancho and Tara

4th: Gail and Maddie

These days are planned in the hope that they will be “race ready” for our Summer Season in October.

Also thanks to Brennan for overseeing on the safety boat.

Next SheSails Day is on Saturday 23rd July.

Winter sailing – 19 June 2022

The forecast was indicating up to 20 knots, but was actually a 14 knot southerly.  13 dinghies set sail on a new course created by duty officer, Dave, with “gates” to choose from on the top mark, then downwind, keeping the green marker to port, reaching across to a wing mark (golf course side), quick gybe around the wing mark, reaching to another set of gates, down to the bottom mark and repeat (not going through the finish line until the 2nd lap).

It was a handicap start to a maximum of 10 minutes (Peter Fell, sailing “Dreadnought”, the only Radial sail laser), who ploughed through the fleet, claiming 3rd Place in race 1.

Before the start, Mon, sailing laser, “Rolling Stone”, got stuck in irons, tried to rectify it and fell out on the leeward side, and sailed the 2 races saturated.

Young Ari made his debut to laser sailing on “Tipsy Too”.  He did a great job getting as far as he did, in the conditions, and was having a good race against Debbie on “Flying Dragon”.   Unfortunately, he capsized but did get a front-row seat, watching the gybing on the wing mark, while capsized.  From that point, he sat on the gunnel on his upturned boat, watching the fleet pass by. Deb also capsized trying to avoid Ari and missed her podium finish.  John, who was assisting on the safety boat with Bryan, came to the rescue and sailed Ari back to the shore.

Dave got in “all sorts”, sailing  Impulse “Matchbox”.  He managed 3 capsizes in the first race – one due to bad sailing (from his own words), one gear failure, and to finish if off, he simply fell off the boat, deciding that “Matchbox” could sail herself!  Hence a DNF in the first race.

Bit of a delay in between races saw Peter on “Dreadnought” go for an unexpected swim too.

Results of Race 1 – Kate (who had a handicap of 8 minutes) sailing “Bluey” sailed into 1st Place, skipper Craig, with crew Daniel and Charlie, sailing corsair “Gidget”, came in 2nd, with Peter Fell placing 3rd.

Doug, skipper of “Cyanara” decided his crew, Alan and Steve (visiting from Newcastle), needed an extra workout by constantly “bailing”, despite not capsizing …

With 12 starting in the Race 2, Debbie, sailing “Flying Dragon”, flew into 1st Place, with Kate on “Bluey” coming 2nd and Craig and crew on “Gidget” sailing into 3rd place.  All 12 dinghies completed the course.

Mon missed her start time by a minute in Race 2, much to her disgust!

The race was changed to 1 lap mid-race (most of us knowing none the wiser) until the hooter sounded when sailors were heading back upwind to complete the 2nd lap.

Two corsairs, Peter Ross, with crew Brennan and Kate, sailing “It’s Academic”, and Doug and crew on “Cyanara” were fighting to get over the line on a port tack, until Mon on “Rolling Stone”, called starboard to put a spanner in the works.  Doug had to tack away and then Peter, and Doug crossed the line first.  Tight squeeze, but one has to keep things interesting.

Lex sailed with Debbie Beard on the Pacer 2930 and has been “fine tuning” the new club pacer, racing her for the Winter season.

Also good to see Phoebe Reedman as skipper on corsair “Exhale” with owner Michael Grace and Niamh, finishing as 2nd corsair in Race 2.

The sausage sizzle afterwards and race presentation brings us altogether to have a laugh and debrief an excellent day on the water.

Thanks to Bryan and John on the safety boat, Adam for being Duty Officer, Dave taking his turn as on Race Officer for the day, and Gail for timekeeping and cooking onions first up in the morning, and cooking the BBQ.  Also thanks to those who helped on the BBQ too.

Just a reminder for those who are not members require a Sail Pass to sail. This can be done on your mobile on the day before you race.

Great to see club members Dave Chester and Tony Ynot drop by and say “hi”.  We look forward to seeing them sailing again with us soon.

Next race day is on in 2 weeks on 3rd July.  All welcome!

There are 3 others also attending who did not complete the last course, so you are welcome to go over what you have learnt in the course again.

She Sails Day 1 – Saturday 12 March 2022

On Saturday we held our second Learn to Sail Day 1 course for 2022 with 4 new sailors and 2 sailors from the previous course.

With 15 knot winds and gusts up to 20 knots we had a great day on the water, with participants each experiencing helming, rounding markers, gybing and capsizing!

Huge thanks to our volunteers, Bryan (safety boat), Brennan (safety boat and teaching), Kate and daughter Charly (who loved seeing her mum capsize), Karen and Kynan, Lex, Peter Ross, Gail and Debbie Beard.

Our new sailors (who are also now club members) left quite “chuffed” about the day. On Sunday, sailor Toni, said she hadn’t felt so “exhausted and exhilarated” in a long time and is looking forward to Day 2 on 26 March. They realized very quickly that dinghy sailing is not about “sipping champagne” onboard a yacht!

If you would like to learn to sail a dinghy, or you are an experienced sailor who would like to volunteer your time sharing your knowledge, please email the club.
