Race 2 is coming up! Sunday, 29th of October

Forecast is looking really nice. Should be a great start for the two class champ series on this weekend – Corsairs and Multihulls (NOT Impulses – error in calendar)

Good luck to all the Lasers and Impulses heading to Harwood this weekend for the Singlehanders regatta.

Another sailing season starts and we hope to see most of you at both our …
Single Handed Regatta on 28/29 October and the
Bridge to Breakers on 11/12 November,

Attached are the notices of race for both these regattas.

This is also advance notice of the date of our Annual Regatta 10/11 MARCH 2018.

We decided that our formula is so successful that we shouldn’t change anything. Our race fees remain the same as last year, our camping area will again be well mown and welcoming, our meals are always tops, the Commodore’s sticky date puddings memorable, the competition friendly but sometimes fierce, juniors who have started racing catered for and finally the buzz and vibe that all of you bring to these events. Weather? well we can’t change that either.

Please reply to our Commodore Hariet Woodrow if you have any queries, especially if you are a first timer, either by email hariet@outlook.com or phone 0409 664 511

Looking forward to catching up with you all again,

Pam Ditton, BRSC Secretary

RECORD CREW NUMBERS in the First Race of Summer Sailing on the Tweed

19 boats took out 40 happy sailors for the first race of the Tweed Valley Sailing Clubs 7th Summer Race Series on Sunday 8th October with some of the closest competition to date.

Line honours went to father and daughter team John & Saffron Cooke on their Weta Tri beating the first monohull, Kate Yeomans (Laser) by only 10 seconds which was a great start to the season for Kate in only her second series sailing Lasers. It was a Laser class championship race so an important one for the Laser sailors. The boys had better look out for Kate – the light conditions suited her and she was over a minute ahead of Gary McCrohon with John Hayward seconds behind.

The 8 Corsairs included first time racing with TVSC new member Daniel Sieders on “Odin” who led the Corsairs for 2 laps but was taken out on the last lap by Peter Skinner on Corsair “Epic” helmed Max Hennessy and grandson Caspian Nickless. Third Corsair across the line was Alison Blatcher with crew Marg Walgers and Andrew Jaggers on Melita III. There was close racing between the rest of the corsairs too showing this seasons Corsair Class championship starting on Sunday 29 October could be anyones.

Bill Fenelon and crew Taj Krasna on classic NS14 “Tornado” probably had the biggest smiles of the day as they got a win in the first NS14 class champ race. It must have been a tense last leg as they crossed the line only 3 seconds ahead of last years NS14 champions Glenn Slight & Kynan Luescher. Well sailed both crews.

The club welcomed lots of new sailors today including 7 beginners going out for their first race after a short training sail in the morning. Juniors sailing is run by club members on most Sunday mornings at Fingal Head for girls and boys aged 8 to 17 only $5 per session. Adult try sailing sesssions are also available. Contact us for more information.

Try Sailing Day at Fingal Head

Ever wished you could hop on a boat and fly long without the need for petrol power? The members of the Tweed Valley Sailing Club invite you to join them next Sunday 24 September at Fingal Head to try sailing for yourself. Dinghy sailing can be a competitive sport or a recreational pass time for all ages. Bring the kids or come on your own – you will be warmly welcomed and will learn how to crew on a 16ft Corsair or one of the clubs smaller dinghies. Experienced sailors are also welcome.

TVSC is a community oriented club and aims to show that sailing is an affordable, accessible and fun sport. Our summer sailing season is about to start with the first race on 8 October.  We also have regular fun sailing, adult training and weekly Juniors sailing as well as away weekends.

Record Breaking 2017 Tumbulgum Passage Race

A gale warning issued on Saturday put the wind up some of the entrants who pulled out at the last minute from the Tweed Valley Sailing Club’s Tumbulgum Passage Race. Sunday morning brought sunshine and a just the right amount of SSW breeze to reward the 18 entrants, 3 safety boats, 1 spectator boat and all the spectators along the river bank with the fastest Condong to Fingal race to date. The forecast turned out to be correct, no gales but an unpredictable 12 to 22 knots to keep the sailors working hard.

Dave Chester & Isaac Poulsen on Hobie 16 “Sledder” took line honours from Glenn Slight (Maricat) who, after leadng for part of the race, blew his chance for glory this year with a nose dive capsize just after the Chinderah bridge. Gary McCrohon (Laser) also broke the monuhulls record he came in 44minutes and 58 seconds faster than the previous record held by Kim Stokes on a 505 in 2015.

This years race was made for the multihulls & the spinnaker flying Corsairs with the wind direction giving everyone a downwind run all the way from Condong to Fingal.

As usual, racing was close between the 5 Olympic Class Lasers including visitor Peter Fell from Brisbane Sailing Squadron. The TVSC’s arch rivals John Hayward & Gary McCrohon fought for the lead all the way, finishing 1 min 19 seconds apart with Gary maintaining his winning run. Chris Ruston, a welcome visitor from Gold Coast Yacht Club, came in third on “Cookie Monster”.

“Swell Lady” Monique Smith takes the Corsair prize again

The record fleet of 9 three handed Corsairs were even closer at the finish. Monique Smith, Azo Bell and Tom Busbridge on Swell Lady finally beat Bill Fenelon, Max Hennessy & Steve Holden on 199 “Minnow” by only 57 seconds after they both displayed expert spinnaker work that saw them sharing the lead out ahead of the other 7 Corsairs. Minnow was well out in front until the Stotts Island “wind graveyard” got them and Swell Lady took the lead never to be caught again…. until next time. Also well sailed to 2 Corsairs competing in this race for the first time – Josh Ferguson & Grant Banning on 1107 Peggy and Tom Molloy and Matt Plummer on 616.

Top Prize goes to Local Teacher Lex Branch

The Overall Championship was taken out by Impulse sailor Lex Branch from Bilambil Heights on “Splitter”. He takes the beautiful timber and fired glass river design trophy home that he made for the club. Lex is a maths teacher and Duke of Edinburgh leader at All Saints and a jewellery designer and keen bush walker when not sailing.

The winning caterers were Jo & Geoff Carter, Elaine Brown & Sandy Sorensen , Time keepers Suzanne Blatcher, Kurt Lusecher & Stacey Bech. Safety Boat crews Bryan Towsend, Michael Stephan, Lydia Salvagno, Murwillumbah Rowing club’s Tim Rose & Michael Mills and Rescue Rolly (Roland Schwertner) from Richmond River SC. “We all had a ball – the celebrations went on until sunset and we’re already planning next years race” said race organiser Alison Blatcher.

Tweed Valley SC now takes a month off racing giving the Juniors time to practice and try out some new boats on Sunday mornings. Racing will be back in October. If you want to have a go at sailing in September get in touch with Dave or Alison tvscmail@gmail.com or call 0434 982 922.
